Mixtape #5.2 - Sai x FatKidOnFire

It’s a fairly overcast but sunny Sunday here in London town. Yesterday saw the successful launch of yet another Reset (which continues today at the Nike 1948 Space in Shoreditch, head down to cop some exclusive threads and support the dope UK brands representing!) and today sees the launch of Sai’s FAKE FAKE RECORDS RECORDS night at Basing House (EC2 8AA). Catch the details for everything you need to know on the flyer:

image

To celebrate getting the night off the ground and to keep you guys happy, Sai’s dropped another FatKidOnFire minimix. As most of you know, his first one was absolutely huge and trust me - this one is no different!

Time for a little celebration. Part 4

I still can’t quite believe I’m a free man - I’ve finished my exams! Feels so good to type that.

Anyway, just to drop this fourth and final logo (if you’ve not seen it already). It’s one of my favourites! As I’ve said, if anyone fancies any stickers (once they’re printed) please can you email me your details and how many stickers you’d be down for - simply so I have an idea of how many to be ordering! So please drop a quick email to wil@fatkidonfire.com

While we’re talking about stickers and getting things, how many people would be interested in copping a tee with this sort of design on?! £10 including p&p to the UK sort of idea. Get in contact…

I HAVE FINISHED MY EXAMS!!

Here’s the last of the logos (initial design - sizing of the face/ text may change but you get the idea) designed by the one and only Binz from Villainous Visard - tell him if you’re feeling his hard work (trust me, it was damn hard work but he’s an absolute hero and kept at it) as we like to support our own here at FatKidOnFire HQ.

For all you wonderful people who want to cause a bit of a stir and have noticed what the abbreviation of FatKidOnFire looks like.

For those of you who haven’t… Take a peek

Mixtape #5.1 - Sai x FatKidOnFire

I’ve just finished my penultimate exam (yeah that’s right, I’ve got one exam left) so what better than to celebrate with yet another mixtape?! I know I’ve been flying the dubstep flag higher than I probably should be, there is only so much bass one can take after all (who am I trying to kid?!), so in case any of you aren’t into teh dirty dubsteps the latest addition to the FatKidOnFire music family is primarily a dubstep Dj but we’re treading new paths as far as the genre of this next FatKidOnFire mixtape goes…

image

Starting out producing hip-hop on MPC, Sai decided to concentrate on mixing after moving to London from Burma. I adding dubstep and breakbeat to my repertoire and even spat lyrics in the Burmese hip-hop group Vokal as part of my musical apprenticeship!

I’ve held down residencies at London’s breakbeat stalwarts SUPATRONIX and Door. Promotions’ eclectic cross-genre night Never Grow Up. I’ve rolled with the likes of Rokit Science, sugarbeat(london), Your Mum, Trouble Vision, FiDGET, Ministry Of Sound, Wobble Squad and D.A.N.C.E.

I’ve been booked alongside some of rave’s leading lights including Pendulum, Chase & Status, Plastician, Reso, Brackles, Eddy TM, General Midi, Calvertron, Rennie Pilgrem, Slyde, Freestylers, Utah Saints, Elite Force, Rico Tubbs, A1 Bassline, Bass Weazal, South Rakkas Crew, Toddla T, Baobinga, Raffertie, Deekline & Wizard, SOTO, Plaza de Funk, 2 Bit Thugs, Orbital and many more.

I also founded the UK’s underground Djs & skateboarders group U.G.P. BASS, giving my library of basslines its own agenda and allowing it to push the boundaries of London’s eclectic bass-heavy scene

As I was saying, I was aware of the amount of bass I was throwing your way so please let me present Sai’s first hip-hop minimix. It’s a banger - would it be anything but?

  4. DMX ft. Swizz Beatz - Get It On The Floor
  5. Snoop Dogg ft. Master P - Laylow
  6. Busta Rhymes - As I Come Back

Sai will be doing monthly hip-hop minimixes so stay locked for his next one dropping in a few weeks. Catch Sai on Twitter or Soundcloud (his Pe Pe Pe Mini Mix is a personal favourite of mine) and throw props his way if you’re feeling his skills!

Peace, love and respect. “Let Da Mutaf*cker Burn”

PS - If the mix is getting your blood pumping and your head bopping and you’re at a loose end over the Bank Holiday weekend come on down to The Basing House/ On the Rocks in Shoreditch (E2 8AA) for the launch party of Sai’s latest night FAKE FAKE RECORDS RECORDS - featuring none other than 2x DMC world champion Dj Switch! It’s going be HUGE. I’ll be there taking pictures and probably getting a bit messy so come and party with FatKidOnFire and FAKE FAKE RECORDS RECORDS!

Mixtape #4.1 - Jah-Killin x FatKidOnFire

The sun is out, the sky is blue and the mercury’s finally getting its rise on. Hopefully that finally means summer is here. FatKidOnFire HQ is finally getting excited about life again - I’ve got two more exams until freedom and I went and visited my new flat yesterday. This summer promises to be one of the best yet!

Last week’s superb mix provided by the one and only Dj Scooter seemed to go down a treat and we’re continuing on this theme again this week. Except it’s not Scott who’s provided it. To celebrate the weather, the fast approaching summer and all that’s happening here at FatKidOnFire HQ we’re adding yet another member to the somewhat large FKOF music family….

image

At the early age of 15 Jacquelyn W. aka Jah-Killin began investigating the underground rave scene in the U.S. and quickly became an avid follower. I was particularly attracted to the hip-hop influence on jungle subculture as well as the mesmerizing beats coming from the fresh dupstep sound.

I started to participate in the local music scene with my brother, a local hip-hop sensation supported by our local radio statios, and started to experiment with producing music. I became a featured artist on many collaborations with collectives such as Digital Coalition and Dark Night in Eden.

This exposure allowed me to work with production crews including Family Productions, iNgog-Neato Productions and currently PUSH! Productions. PUSH! is a renown group of local individuals who are pushing the Columbus scene and are aiming high trying to reanimate and nourish the underground community…

  2. Dj Hatcha/ Kromestar - 300
  3. Tech Itch - Stonebreaker
  4. Chestplate - Menace
  5. Dub Police - Explicit
  6. Phokus/ Mr. Boogie - The Infect
  7. ANS - New World

Opening with the brilliant Afterlife from Cardiff’s Lung this mix is yet another banger. Columbus are spoilt with these two superb Djs!

Scooter and Jah-Killin are providing FatKidOnFire mixes on alternate weeks so stay locked for Scooter’s next mix next week.

Catch Jacquelyn on Twitter and let her know if you’re feeling this dark 25 minute mix. I most certainly am - it’s been playing throughout the nights of this week. It’s big!

Peace, love and respect. “THAT DEEP, DARK & DIRRRTY DUBSHIT”

PS - it also turns out Jacquelyn is a bit of an artist. Check out this radness

The Reset is one of the UK’s biggest (and most important) independent streetwear gatherings, showcasing the best streetwear brands that this country has to offer. See the list in the details above for an idea of who we’re talking.

I’ll be there on the Saturday (I’m here on the Sunday!) fulfilling my role as a dutiful intern with the rest of the rather wonderful and insanely talented Second Son family, but I’m also intending to take my camera and do a proper FatKidOnFire recap piece on my experiences at the showcase.

So come on down to meet everyone (including me if you’d be interested in doing so). You do not want to miss this.

Swear down. Be there

PS - has anyone else seen the flyer Getting Rich Is No Dream have dropped for this event? One of the most banters pictures I’ve seen in a long while.

Breaking News (but not really)

To continue the slew (ok only one or two) of updates today, I thought I’d update you on where we’re at here at FatKidOnFire HQ.

But first, a little treat. I tweeted about this yesterday, but for those who aren’t on Twitter or who missed it here’s the first video from Trent Renzor’s latest project. If you don’t know who he is (shame on you) find out more. You may not appreciate the music but you have to admit it’s a damn cool video!

There’s more…

Interview #19 - Self Gained Treasures x FatKidOnFire

I’m almost halfway through the exams (and I’m pleased to report that they’re so far so good) so am back on the (enjoyable) grind here at FatKidOnFire HQ presenting the next interview for your perusal. I have the utmost respect for the man who runs this brand - he’s one of the hardest workers in the scene, working crazy hours to keep his dreams afloat. More than admirable if you ask me…

Check out FatKidOnFire and follow on Twitter @FatKidOnFire

How unbelievably good is this?! A very tired me (been up since 5.30am thanks to the various exam complexes I have) saw this earlier and it quite possibly made my day.

As seen on the lovely Patrick Stardust’s Tumblr page. Please show him some love and check out his wonderful, and very often amusing, art

Mixtape #3.1 - Dj Scooter x FatKidOnFire

Continuing the musical theme running this week here at FatKidOnFire HQ [it’s a) unintentional b) not a bad thing in my book(!); but hopefully there’ll be more interviews to read sometime in the next few days] the latest addition to the musical side of the FKOF family is producing mixes for us all the way from across the Atlantic - Columbus, Ohio to be precise.

image

My geography is pretty rubbish, in case you’re like me and didn’t know how Columbus and London relate to each other here’s a (fairly poor) representation of where Scott is with respect to FatKidOnFire HQ. A rough guestimation put that red line (direct from London to Columbus) at 4,000 miles. That’s a long way!

Anyhow, I’ll let the main man tell you a bit more about himself…

image

Name: Dj Scooter aka Scott Hinton

Age: 27

Location: Columbus, Ohio, USA

Bio: I’ve been spinning since early 1998 in clubs and at a few underground parties.  I started out spinning jungle and drum & bass but moved into hip-hop, trip-hop and downtempo. 2008 saw me introducing dubstep into my repertoire, as well as dabbling in a bit of production with a few friends along the way. Nowadays, I help throw a local Sunday night weekly of underground dance music. I also spin for PUSH! Productions out of Columbus, Ohio as well as being a new addition to the FatKidOnFire family!

Scooter fatkidonfire mix 1 by dj_scooter

Track list:

  1. Dub & Run Crew - Renegade Snares (dubstep refix)
  2. The Bassist & Triage - Nothing’s Final
  3. Komonazmuk - You Fo
  4. Akira Kiteshi - ION-BRU
  5. Tek-One - Broken String
  6. Pure Phase - Rising up like Fuck You Towers
  7. Torquz & Twist - 2012
  8. Excision & Datsik - Boom (Skizm remix)

It’s a damn decent introduction and you’ll be hearing weekly (or as near as we can work it) from Scott - we’ve got weekly minimixes lined up to keep you all on your toes. As always, if you’re feeling this introduction from Dj Scooter, you’ll find him on Myspace, SoundCloud (Myspace is dead) and Twitter. Holla at my boy!

Peace, love and respect. “Dubbety Dub Dub Dubstep Malarkey”

Mixtape #1.3 - Ropper x FatKidOnFire

image

[awesome shot of the Dropfellas boys by Fabio Mojito]

You had the latest mix from Robin Dunne last night; tonight we turn the bass dial up a few notches and let loose with a bit of teh dutty dubsteps. Ollie Ropper has come through with the latest installment in his FatKidOnFire mixes bringing one of the heaviest track lists I’ve seen in a long time, incorporating some seriously big hitters! He says it’s

“hectic man! I was skanking whilst recording it!”

We’re pretty sure he’s right on this one… It’s hectic!

Now Ollie’s no midget, so not sure this is relevant to him getting his skank on - but if you’re unsure of how to dance to dubstep take a look at this, it’ll teach you everything you need to know

Anyway, let’s put you out of your bass-deprived misery. Allow me to present Ollie Ropper’s third FatKidOnFire mix!

Ropper-FatKidOnFire#3 by Ropper

Track list:

  1. Chase & Status ft. Dizzee Rascal - Heavy
  2. Hoax - Jericho
  3. Gemmy - Supligen
  4. Subscape - Bad Man
  5. Plan B - She Said (16Bit remix)
  6. Benny Page & Zero G - Panpipes
  7. She Is Danger - Hurt You (Subscape remix)
  8. Deadmau5 ft. Rob Swire - Ghosts n Stuff (Nero remix)
  9. Way Out West - The Gift (Tek-One remix)

You can also download the mix from Ollie’s SoundCloud page. Give this badman a listen; if you’re feeling the beats give Ollie some props via his Twitter account! Make sure you stay locked on Ollie and his SoundCloud, he’s got a remix going for a special FatKidOnFire fam - more on that later.

Peave, love and respect. “Would you like any bass with that?”

Mixtape #2.2 - Robin Dunne x FatKidOnFire

After spending the last three days (and an accumulated 29 hours) in the library, trying to make things like the mesocorticolimbic dopaminergic reward pathway and Malaria’s exoerythrocytic and erythrocytic phases stick in my head, I decided I deserved some FatKidOnFire time. What I actually want to be doing is this:

image

(That’s me getting my hype on, on a boat, with Mr. Martin Reeves - otherwise known as the one and only Krafty Kuts)

Unfortunately, getting one’s hype on isn’t compatible with getting good results or a good degree (believe me, I’ve tried). Luckily for me, and for you if his first mixtape floated your boat (forgive the pune), Robin Dunne has dropped his latest monthly mix in my inbox. Turn your stereo up to 11 and give this beast a blast! I’ve 19 days ‘till freedom so this mix (and the other few that are in the pipeline!) will be my lifeline for now. It’s another banger (keep an ear out for track 7) and will definitely get you in the mood to get out and party!

MAY 2010 by Robin Dunne

Track list:

  1. Duck Sauce - Barbra Streisand (O-god remix)
  2. Crookers ft. Soulwax and Mixhell - We Love Animals (The Love Supreme remix)
  3. Pogo - Expiliadocious
  4. The Isley Brothers - Live It Up (part 1 & 2)
  5. Hot City - Hot City Bass
  6. Jamtech Foundation - Too Fast (Zombie Disco Squad remix)
  7. Robin Dunne - George’s Marvelous Medicine
  8. Daft Punk - Rollin’ and Scratching (Chilly Gonzales re-work)
  9. Tony Senghore - If You Came Here
  10. 2 Door Cinema Club - Something Good Can Work (Beataucue remix)
  11. Birdman ft. Drake and Lil’ Wayne - Money to Blow (acapella)
  12. Beni - Maximus (Andy and Ohh Ee Blue Version)

You can also download the mix from Mediafire ->here<-

So for now, give this a listen and please continue to be patient with the lack of (hopefully) interesting things to read here at FatKidOnFire HQ - bear with me and I’ll make it up to you once school is done!

Peace, love and respect

W

PS - I hope you approve of FatKidOnFire’s new look!

PPS - A big, big thank you has to go to my lovely Glaswegian friend, (lots of Glesga love in this post) Ashley P. Bell, for coming up with the tagline I’m running at the minute - I think it’s brilliant! If you’re ever in the need for a bright smile, a kind word or some kickass art Ashley’s the one to turn to.

Where I'm at...

I’m on my way to bed to prepare for my first 12 hour shift in the library as I made the mistake of looking at a calendar yesterday and realised it’s just over a week until my first exam. Scare tactics will hopefully do wonders for both my revision and my degree.

But I thought I’d better update you as to where I’m at with life, seeing as one of the reasons I started FatKidOnFire was to document my search for fulfillment and/ or a job after graduation.
